Why we started this

Back-to-school season brings me back to why we started FamilyHQ.

Every school year starts the same way: a flood of information, and somewhere in there is the one thing you actually need to know.

I'm Richard. Between practice schedules, school apps, and buried email newsletters, I haven't been winning any parent of the year awards. "What app did I see that message in? Wait, is tomorrow the day they need to wear a hat to school?" My co-founder Anthony hit the same wall with his own kids, different school, same scramble every afternoon. Between the two of us, we found the fix didn't exist yet, so we decided to build it.

This isn't a product we built to sell. It's the product we needed and couldn't find, so we built it for our own families first, and now we want to share it with yours.

We call this Family Intelligence. It's bigger than any single calendar or checklist, built to understand what's going on across your whole family's life, not just the school schedule.

Three things we're committing to

Value over price. We want this to be invaluable for your family, while staying affordable for every parent, full stop.

No ads, ever. Your family's calendar isn't inventory, and it never will be, full stop.

Your data stays yours. We will never sell your family's data, full stop.

What's coming this school year

Transparency matters to us here too. We initially built the roadmap around the problems we were personally struggling with, admittedly a little selfish. We want that to change as we look at what else to tackle. Two things we know we want to build next.

Cafeteria Tracking, up first. No more guessing pack vs. buy at 7am, or getting surprised by what lunch actually costs by the end of the month.

  • Quick links to manage lunch balances
  • A day-by-day view of upcoming lunches, so pack vs. buy is a decision you make ahead of time
  • A running estimate of what the month will actually cost
  • Save your kids' favorite foods and let FamilyHQ recommend buy vs. pack, then drop a grocery reminder on your calendar before you need it
  • Stretch goal: lunch balances and menus synced directly from your school's cafeteria system, so there's one less app to open

Summer Camps, in time to plan for summer. A single place to see what summer camps exist near you, with your kids' likes and dislikes saved so narrowing down options doesn't mean forty open browser tabs.

  • Save favorites for next year and get notified when registration opens
  • An hour-by-hour calendar view of the camps you've picked, synced to whatever calendar you already use
  • Stretch goal: apply for and track camp registration, right in FamilyHQ

We believe in the value each of these stretch goals will bring, but they depend on partnerships with companies that care about the same things we do.

Your voice in this

As we grow past our own two families, we're building this with other parents in mind, the ones who feel exactly how we did: tired of juggling five different apps, tired of chasing down information that should already be in one place, and tired of ads and subscriptions that take without giving anything back.

Tell us the biggest headaches you're still fighting. There are two good ways to do it:

  • Tell us what to build next — in our community, where you can also see what other parents are asking for. Some of the best ideas start with reading someone else's answer and thinking that one, please.
  • Write to us directly — for anything specific to your family, or that you'd rather keep between us.

We read all of it.

We'll figure this out together.
